William Shakespeare (1564–1616), long considered the greatest of English writers, is responsible for beloved works such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Despite his prolificness, he left behind few manuscripts, and the signature reproduced here is one of just a few remaining traces of his handwriting.
